Taxi Driver
Robert DeNiro and Martin Scorsese’s greatest achievement. It’s a dark noir with so much to say about loneliness, and a troubled mind, done with impeccable visual storytelling. It’s also an interesting look at the morality behind violence. The screenwriter, Paul Schrader, had a very strong personal attachment to this film. This makes me worry slightly about Paul… In Bruges Genius playwright Martin McDonaghs debut feature film, for which he took on both directing and screenwriting roles. A British black comedy about two hit men hiding out in Bruges. Some of cinemas best pieces of dialogue and an amazing character-duo dynamic. One the few black comedies that pulls off looking at serious issues of morality with equal humor and tenderness. The Departed One the greatest, if not the greatest, crime films of all time. The film that earned the great Scorsese his much belated Oscar win. Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, and Leo DiCaprio all at their best here. The amount of F-bombs is worth the watch alone…if only out of pure admiration. Atonement In my opinion, the greatest piece of British cinema ever made. Based on Ian McEwans novel of the same name. Amazing soundtrack by Dario Marianelli, using diegetic sound and non-diegetic sound to create music that carries one of the greatest narratives I’ve seen on film. Oh and like…that long-take tracking shot…woah. Goodfellas The most raw gangster film ever made. Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Ray Liotta make the greatest wiseguy trio out. Also featuring one of cinemas best-improvised scenes. The Godfather Cause Marlon Brando… Whiplash One of the best films in recent years. Written and directed by newcomer Damien Chazelle, based on his experiences as a drummer at music school. This gives incredible insight into the pursuit of success, happiness. and greatness, and finding the line between the three. A must see for any young creative trying to make it. Also has a damn-fine drum solo. Inside Illewlyn Davis A subtle look at self-interest, creative pursuit, and loneliness. It’s a slow burning film about trying and failing and trying and failing. Very real. Beautiful music, cinematography, and an INSANE performance from Oscar Issacs. Good Will Hunting This is my favorite screenplay of all time. Incredible writing by (surprisingly) Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The story of a stubborn, boy-genius whos’ bond with his friends, and his impulse towards violence and ‘bad-boy’ antics holds him back from success. Robin Williams greatest performance of his career as the honest and genuine psychologist who manages to reach Will Huntings heart. The Dark Knight Cause Heath Ledger… |
